Glen Campbell at the CMA Reception at White House

Post by admin »

A HIGHLIGHT FROM THE LEGENDARY CAREER OF GLEN CAMPBELL!

Washington, D.C. became “Nashville North” for one special evening on March 15, 1983, when Glen Campbell (Official) joined hundreds of other Country Music Association members at The White House for a special reception held in celebration of the CMA’s 25th anniversary.

President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan hosted the reception, and the President gave tremendous opening remarks about the importance of country music to America and to the world:

“Someone once said that it's easier to understand a nation by listening to its music than it is by learning their language. And when you listen to country music, you hear the beauty of our wide open spaces, the emotions of a people whose hearts are as big and full as the land they live in. The country sound has become a good will ambassador for us all around the world….” (Excerpt from Ronald Reagan: "Remarks at a White House Reception for Members of the Country Music Association," March 15, 1983.)

CMA Chairman Sam Marmaduke then presented the Reagans with thank you gifts including a personally autographed album from each of the CMA country artists scheduled to perform a concert at Constitution Hall on the following evening. (This concert with Glen is currently on YT.)

White House staff photographer Karl Schumacher captured the gala highlights including a moment when Glen appears to be having a serious talk with his president. (Looking at this picture now of these two great men together, we can’t let this moment pass without acknowledging their tragic deaths from the same debilitating disease.)
