Another super article with Jimmy Webb talking about his tribute show to Glen Campbell.
“I’m doing this tour as a tribute to someone who’s very dear to me,” said Webb.... “Someone whom I spent the better part of 50 years partnering with. Someone who was singularly interested in advancing my agenda as a songwriter, and pushing my star higher. Even at the expense of his own career, he never failed to do something nice for me whenever he could.”

You are right in what you say. If you hear the lyrics the war is just the back drop as to why they are separated in the first place. It doesn't actually make a statement on the war itself. If you listen to Universal soldier, that is without doubt an anti war song and doesn't beat about the bush on its topic. Jimmy was telling the story from the perspective of two people in love,longing to be together again and in the man's case hoping not to die before he could return.to Galveston. The song isn't about Galveston either, as I have read in other blogs that again is just where the story is set. It is about two people in love who happen to live there. Randy I am sure you will remember that Jimmy wasn't too pleased when Glen reset the tempo and in fact Jimmy himself said he felt this made it a pro war song.Hear Jimmy's comments on The sessions DVD.
In the link Dee posted , Galveston is referred to an anti-war song. I never felt that way. My opinion is like the description Brad Paisley uses along the lines of "A man in the midst of fighting a war and longing for the girl he left behind" I see the anti-war label on that song so much, makes me wonder if some writers just repeat something they read somewhere else. Anyone else wanna weigh in ?

'Wichita Lineman' boasts one of the most unabashed declarations of love ever written - "I need you more than want you/ And I want you for all time" - and it's a testament to Webb's intuitive talent as a writer that the words aren't needy or saccharine, but rather convey unmistakably real emotion.
As soon as he heard the demo (of WL), (Glen) Campbell sensed it was a very special song. "Every hair follicle stood up on my body," he remembered. "It's just a masterfully written song."
Also -- why Al De Lory loved this song right away after first hearing it.
