Glen Campbell's Studio Sessions
Re: Glen Campbell sessions
PHIL SPECTOR’S GREATEST HITS – This LP set is on Warner/Spector Records. Manufactured and distributed by Warner Brothers Records Inc. This release came out in 1977, Phil Spector Records, Inc. This is a double vinyl LP album on the Warner Brothers label, 2SP-9104. Both records are in mint condition, it looks like they have never been played. The gatefold jacket is also near mint condition. All the songs Phil produced with original artists including, The Crystals, Ronettes, Curtis Lee, The Righteous Brothers, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, Darlene Love, Sonny Charles and the Checkmates, Teddy Bears, Ike and Tina Turner, Paris Sisters, Gene Pitney, and more. There are too many to list! The back jacket has lengthy quotes from former Beatles George Harrison, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono. Musician credits are given to Glen Campbell on the guitar, Sonny Bono and Cher, Tony Mottola, Leon Russell, Jim Horn, Ray Brown, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Al De Lory, Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye, Jerry Cole, Phil Spector, Joe Pass, and many more. Sonny Bono plays percussion and is a background singer. Cher is also a background singer on this LP. The background cast consists of hundreds of people. Arrangers are Jack Nitzsche, and Perry Botkin, Jr. The Producer is Phil Spector. Glen Campbell played the guitar on most of the songs listed on this LP. The list is a partial list, as it would be impossible to name all the musicians, singers that were used in the making and producing of this great LP set. This is an excellent collector’s item. Glen Campbell played on the song “Be My Baby” with the Ronettes from 1963. That is the first track on this LP.
Anything with PHIL SPECTOR will most likely be Glen Campbell---I believe this was all part of the Wrecking Crew People!!! Taken from MY private collection.

Surf LP by “The Vettes” called Rev-Up – The explosive new sound of hot rod music! MGM Records- E/SE-4193 A first pressing LP by The Vettes The record was released in 1964 it was actually recorded by the Astronauts, Bruce Johnson, and Wrecking Crew studio musician stable that included Steve Douglas on Sax. Other infamous surf musicians included on these tracks are Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Tom Tedesco, Ray Pohlman and Jay Migliori. Record has some surface scratches, but still plays okay. It is about an even split on vocal songs vs. instrumentals. It is a very rare record.
THIS IS A FABULOUS PRESSING!

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
Mike, I'll continue this conversation by saying that Bob Keane, who owned and managed Del-Fi Records in Hollywood, stated in the liner notes for "Del-Fi Hotrodders", a compilation of:
The Darts - Hollywood Drag
The De-Fenders - Drag Beat... and
The Deuce Coupes - Hotrodders' Choice
(CCM-474-2, Collector's Choice Music label, c. 2004) ...
that he relied mostly on Glen Campbell for Hollywood Drag. However, in the same liner notes, Keane also admits that he is unsure of who played on Hollywood Drag's tracks. Recorded at his own studio, be believes he paid the musicians a one-time fee on a "work for hire" basis.
Keane also states that Glen, Hal Blaine and Russell Bridges (later known as Leon Russell) were "on a lot of our Del-Fi recordings, especially in '61 and '62."
To me, these notes imply that there were no contracts, little or nothing in writing, and Keane's recall is not so reliable in 2004.
arlw -- have you ever come across confirmation about the Del-Fi record label tracks that GC was on?
Mike -- siblis and Cowpoke provided specific songs in earlier posts (scratch The Champs' "Tequila") that might be of help to you.
Thanks for your questions!

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
Dee,
Dorsey Burnette and Thurley were married. Glen met her in LA and gave her a job. Mike,
I will try and post some records and artists for you when on the main computer. Glen was into all surfing music in the 60s time frame. With The Byrds, Glen is on Red Rubber Ball and Turn Turn Turn, and probably more. Hot Rod High comes on a. CD now and Glen is on that too. Back in the 60s, early 60s, alot of record companies didn't credit all people on the recording. When on a CD, a booklet will tell you mostly everthing you need to know .

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
Hi all!
I am really going to enjoy compiling my version of GC's greatest session hits! What I would love is specific songs...I know he's on some surf/hot rod stuff..specific tracks? Which Byrds song?..which Sonny and Cher?..know what I mean? Does someone have a favorite hot guitar solo from a certain session/surf band? I own a cd...called, "Hot Rod Hits" (Del-Fi DFCD 70241-2) featuring a lotta 'studio/surf/hot rod' bands that didn't really exist outside the recording studio. The Deuce Coupes, the Darts, the De-Fenders...are they ALL GC? GC is apparently on, "Rods n Ratfinks" too... "The Weirdos and Mr. Gasser"..but what tracks??
Also, does anyone have photos from this era?..GC in the studio..or maybe a head shot or something?.pre-fame. 1963 or so?
Thanks in advance to
everyone!

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
arlw, 30% pre-Internet is amazing.
Your collection just goes to show that if you want to learn more about Glen Campbell, then study the artists of Glen's generation and also those artists who were a generation or so ahead of him.
Still, it isn't easy to "find Glen" or any of the Wrecking Crew players on early recordings. These musicians were usually not identified in the artists' liner notes for their albums.
So, kudos to you for all of your years of research -- as well as Glen's assistants who corresponded with you and also other Glen fans who have conducted extensive research and shared it. It takes a village...
Thank you again for sharing Glen's session information here with us.
Dee
P.S. Was Glen's secretary, Thurley Burnette, related to Dorsey Burnette?

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
Dee,
Have to give credit to Glens secretary back in the early 70s, Thurley Burnette, as we wrote to one another and she fed me information all about Glen, and passed out other fans to me as well. Some were in the UK, others were here in the US. We wrote to one another and got info that way too! Then Lori Raine took over and the last one I remember was Sharon Eaves. She also ran the Glen Campbell Store to buy shirts, and whatever was for sale. Many fans that I kept in touch with over the years are no longer with us, but the information they contributed will live with us all forever. Hope this helped you.

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
Dee,
You are about right on that percentage, 30% before the computer. I had a dj friend here in Dallas and also with all the reading of the groups from the 60's in books and magazines, the more I read, the more I found Glen. Looked in the 60s through 66 era so one would be really amazed how many times Glen Campbell's name came up! I knew about The Wrecking Crew through reading only, but never really followed it. The more I read, the more I found Glen and who he was associated with. Then I wrote their names and tracked the recordings! Lots of work but over the years, with my lps, cds, dvds, imported records, I have over 1500! Glen was big with everyone, from the Monkess to Paul Peterson, to Mama and Papas, and Nat King Cole, and etc.
I also learned that Glenco Productions was Glen! Gary Usher played a huge role in Glens recordings and also Jimmie Haskell. It was a great ride and I wouldn't change a thing!

Re: Glen Campbell sessions
arlw, I just can't imagine the amount of footwork you had to do to find those 45s and albums now in your collection...also, all of your follow-up verifications that Glen was on these recordings.
If you had to give a ballpark percentage of how many recordings you tracked down prior to the advent of the Internet / world wide web versus how many you found with access to the web, what would these percentages look like? I'll take a guess here...you might have found 30% before the availability of the Web and 70% after?
Also, how did you first become aware of Glen's session work? Did you hear about it through the record dealers at the conventions, Glen, or ? It seems to me that for many years, Glen's contributions as an A-list session guitar player were glossed over by the press in general (or maybe it is fairer to say that The Wrecking Crew was not widely discussed / disclosed in the sixties).
Thanks!
Dee
