I agree with you Cowpoke, Glen's version of events sounds so much more prophetic than Jimmy's or Johnny's. Just passing it to Glen's producer because they thought it would be a hit for Glen doesn't have the romance of Glen's version. Seeing the album on a wall and listening to the song, feeling homesick and recording it with such emotion is what dreams are made of. I guess the true story will be lost in the mists of time now.
I guess with Rhinestone Cowboy the stars aligned on that day.

And yes Randy that is one mighty fine performance. I think the fact that Glen was in front of all his peers and had just won Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year pushed him to this more than perfect performance?

Thanks for reminding us about that interview Randy! Yes, there are different versions of all kinds of stories regarding Glen and Jimmy. My hunch is that both Jimmy and Glen are more about telling a insightful story then researching what exactly happened at a certain time and place. But maybe both stories are true. After all, with Rhinestone Cowboy there are also 3 stories as to how Glen got that song: Glen heard it as an album track on FM radio while driving his car, Capitol president Al Coury presented it to Glen in a meeting AND co-producer Dennis Lambert got the song from songwriter Larry Weiss himself!

Here's Johnny Rivers version of how Phoenix got to Glen. I have posted this before.

And I'll take this performance over any other live performance I have ever seen.

Hi Dee, I know Jimmy will do his research well on the facts of any of his stories, but amazes me how many times Glen and Jimmy have had different versions of some incident in the past. Of course Glen could be mistaken as well. Either way the book should be a good read. I hope he does a section on what some of the songs are about and their background. Such as" All my loves laughter" etc. I have never fully understood that songs real meaning. What about "By the time I get to Phoenix" ? A total mystery.

Mike, from what I have observed and possibly contributed to in a very minor way, if at all, JW is being very, very careful about his fact checking for both his forthcoming book and his "The Glen Campbell Years" tribute show.
With regard to the latter project, he has also had tremendous support from Glen's family members, too.

Hi Cowpoke,
You probably know, Jimmy is in the process of writing an autobiography due out next year as I recall.
I wonder sometimes about old stories that get told. As we know Glen says he saw the song on a Johnny Rivers album and wondered if it was the city or the bird rising from the ashes. Jimmy's account is that the song was played to Al De Lory. by Johnny Rivers. I know we had had this discussion before but it does seem that sometimes two stories co-exist and either side changes their version. I do hope that the book will include a lot of unheard stories about the artists and experiences Jimmy has had over his life. That would be a great read.

That is great news, I just hope Jimmy comes to the Midlands region as these venues are a tad too far to get too.
