Hate to admit it, but I had largely lost touch with Glen's music for many years. Two recent events brought it all back. One was a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame where I saw several film clips which reminded me of Glen's wide ranging talent. The other was a chance to see Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me. It's an extraordinary movie on many levels. Here is a link to the review I wrote for Huffington Post.
"This year, I haven’t seen a more honest and courageous story than that of singer Glen Campbell’s farewell tour after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. But the film is as much a love story as it is a farewell."
New Documentary Chronicles Glen Campbell’s Farewell
My mother’s culture brought me Glen Campbell, Harry Belafonte, Dinah Shore, and Lawrence Welk. I didn’t really appreciate their songs then. And I don’t actively listen to them now – except for Campbell’s. His songs hold up, and the searing love and heartbreak that he channels in them are now my love and heartbreak, too. You feel it in your head and in your gut.
...a film that’s exhilarating, wistful, inspiring and haunting.
This film is bound to help boost Campbell’s legacy as a performer and an artist, making classic tunes such as “Gentle on My Mind” and “Wichita Lineman” more indelible than ever.
